DHL's Greed
In May 2008, DHL – a division of Deutsche Post World Net from Germany – announced that it was suspending domestic freight and package delivery. This had the effect of virtually completely suspending operations in Wilmington, Ohio, putting thousands out of work. DHL first set up shop in Wilmington after conniving nearly half-a-billion dollars in public investment to develop their air cargo hub.

After public outrage, DHL set aside funds for crewmember severance, ostensibly in recognition of their social responsibility to this pilot group, and asked the pilots’ direct employer, ABX Air, to work with the pilots to determine how these funds would be distributed.

Now, after abandoning promises to the city of Wilmington, the state of Ohio and the entire region, DHL is abandoning the promise they made to the pilots – refusing to release this lifeline severance money to the very loyal crew members who flew the routes, kept their integrity and served their employer honorably for years.

Typical of corporate shell games, DHL and ABX Air are pointing fingers, casting blame, and making excuses as to why severance funds have not been released. The real answer: Greed.

The longer DHL and ABX get to hold on to the pilots’ money, the more interest DHL makes on the balance and the more contract concessions ABX can extract from the remaining pilots. Unfortunately, every additional day that goes by is devastating to the pilots and their families.
